This month as the US season of beach soccer nears its end, with all major tournaments having been completed in the month of June, we take a look at Europe and its annual Euro Beach Soccer League. This league, not the only one in Europe at this time, has all the national teams compete annually for the crown of the EBSL and the best national team in Europe. This year marks the 20th year of the competition.
This season teams take part in two divisions, the top tier (Division A) and the bottom tier (Division B). Twelve teams contest Division A which are all the teams which qualified from the previous year consisting of the top eleven finishers from last year plus Azerbaijan who were promoted to the top tier. Division B accommodates fourteen nations which did not gain promotion from last season, plus Romania who were relegated from the top tier.
Each team from Division A will play in two stages whilst each team from Division B will play in one stage. During each stage the participating nations will earn points for the overall league tables. At the end of the stages, according to the league tables, the eight best teams in Division A will advance to the Superfinal to then compete directly to become the winners of this year’s EBSL. Meanwhile, the top seven teams in Division B (the stage winners and best runners-up) and the team ranked bottom of Division A will play in the Promotion Final to try to earn a spot in Division A next year.
The returning champion from 2016 is the Ukraine. May sound crazy as they are not exactly know for their beaches, but they have on more than one occasion have found themselves at the top of the heap. Whereas they are currently in the top eight which will compete in the Supergroup the team on top at this time is Spain. That being said Portugal (2015 World Cup Champion) has played half as many games sitting second with three games in hand and only four points short of the top table position.
Each team will play in 2 group stages. Spain has completed their two stages having won both and high lighting one of the world’s best Lorenc Gomez who was the Golden Boot of Stage 1 and Player of the tournament. But the stage is set with them losing two matches and leaving the door open for Portugal, Switzerland, and even the Ukraine catching or even surpassing them in the standings. The only team clearly not going to make it is Greece who sits even below the teams who have not played a match with 3 losses and -9 GD.
