22nd Annual Santa Cruz Beach Soccer Open Sets Northern California Participation Record with 215 Teams

Santa Cruz Beach Soccer Tournament Draws Record Crowd to Main Beach During June 6–7 Weekend

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — June 6–7, 2026 — The 22nd Annual Pro-Am Beach Soccer Santa Cruz Open delivered another historic weekend of competition, welcoming a record-breaking 215 teams competing on 22 fields at Santa Cruz Main Beach. The tournament, hosted by Pro-Am Beach Soccer, became the largest beach soccer tournament in Northern California history, bringing together thousands of players, coaches, families, referees, and supporters for two days of competition along the iconic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

Representing more than 60 soccer clubs and organizations, teams traveled from throughout California and beyond to participate in one of the premier youth and adult beach soccer events in the United States. The tournament featured hundreds of matches across multiple age groups and divisions, further solidifying Santa Cruz’s reputation as a major destination for beach soccer.

Historic Advancement in Beach Soccer Referee Development

One of the most significant accomplishments of the 2026 Santa Cruz Beach Soccer Open occurred off the field.

For the first time in the United States, a beach soccer tournament featured two FIFA Beach Soccer Referees.  They led referee education and development initiatives before and during the event. Through a series of clinics, training sessions, and mentorship opportunities, the tournament assembled what was likely one of the most educated and prepared referee groups ever seen at a beach soccer competition in the country.

We understand officiating decisions will always be debated in any competitive sport.  But, the level of preparation, professionalism, and consistency demonstrated throughout the weekend represented an important step forward for beach soccer.  The officiating in the United States is only getting better and we are happy its core resides with PABS.

The investment in referee education reflects Pro-Am Beach Soccer’s continued commitment to elevating standards.  We will continue improving the overall experience for players, coaches, and spectators alike.

Community, Competition, and the Spirit of Beach Soccer

As with any event of this size, challenges naturally arose throughout the weekend. However, the overwhelming spirit of sportsmanship, competition, and community carried the tournament forward.

Thousands of athletes competed with energy, determination, and joy, creating memorable moments on every field while showcasing the passion and excitement that continue to drive the growth of beach soccer.

The event once again fulfilled Pro-Am Beach Soccer’s mission.  This includes bringing diverse communities together through sport, creating opportunities for connection, competition, and unforgettable experiences on the sand.

Environmental Responsibility Remains a Priority

One area where organizers recognize the opportunity for improvement from the 22nd Annual Pro-Am Beach Soccer Santa Cruz Open is environmental stewardship.

Pro-Am Beach Soccer has long taken pride in leaving tournament venues cleaner than we found them, and our staff and volunteers devoted countless hours throughout the weekend to uphold that commitment.

While many participants demonstrated outstanding respect for the beach environment, the volume of trash left behind in some areas required extensive cleanup efforts after play concluded.

“Our mission has always been about more than soccer,” event organizers stated. “We strive to bring diverse communities together, create moments of joy, and deliver events that reflect the values we share. We were successful in creating an incredible experience for thousands of people.  But, we also recognize that we can do better when it comes to minimizing our environmental impact. Encouraging teams to take greater responsibility for keeping our beaches clean is a must.”

The organization plans to review procedures and implement additional initiatives for future tournaments.  We need to reinforce environmental responsibility and ensure beach soccer remains a positive force for the communities that host these events.

Record-Breaking Success for Santa Cruz Beach Soccer

The 2026 Pro-Am Beach Soccer Santa Cruz Open overcame the challenges that naturally accompany an event of this scale and delivered a landmark year for the tournament.

Record participation, continued growth of the sport, referee education advancements, and the countless memories created throughout the weekend.  All point toward a bright future for beach soccer in Northern California and across the United States.

Pro-Am Beach Soccer extends its sincere gratitude to the players, coaches, referees, volunteers, sponsors, staff members, families, and supporters who helped make this year’s event possible. The organization also appreciates the constructive feedback received from participants. We are grateful for the many messages of encouragement and appreciation participants share after the tournament.

Every suggestion, compliment, and critique helps strengthen the event and ensure future editions continue to evolve and improve.

Next Up: 20th Annual San Francisco Beach Soccer Classic

With the Santa Cruz Beach Soccer Open now complete, attention turns to the 20th Annual San Francisco Beach Soccer Classic. It is taking place on August 1, 2026, at Ocean Beach in San Francisco.

The tournament will be conducted as a single-day beach soccer event. This creates a unique format while significantly limiting the number of available team spots. We will fill divisions on a first-come, first-served basis and close registration as each division reaches capacity.

Register early, spread the word, and secure your place before divisions fill.

Thank you again for being part of another unforgettable weekend of beach soccer in Santa Cruz. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the sand this August.
